So today is my birthday. It is also the day I asked my wife to marry me. And of course, in the interest of even further overloading the date – today is the day I started actually building my airplane. There wasn’t much I could do since my tools are still on a brown truck between me and Iowa, but I wanted to do something.

So looking at the plans, the first thing you do is cut the vertical stabilizer rear spar caps using dimensions provided. Basically you’re cutting a taper toward the end of two pieces of radius bent aluminum. Van’s really wastes no time with the, “don’t screw this up or you’ll have to order a new part” type operations. But I figure I have a band saw, this is something I can actually do now. So after measuring, and remeasuring, and then getting a finer point Sharpie and remeasuring, I drew a straight line and made my cut. Not the cleanest or straightest cut in the world but at least I left myself some margin to clean it up.

If I wasn’t excited before, I definitely am now. UPS better get here quick! Tracking info says tools will be here tomorrow – Don’t let me down Brown!

First cuts and… excitement
